It’s Been a While and a Poem

So, it has been a while since I posted here. It has been an insane year in which I took on an academic leadership role, started earning my PhD, had one of my schools unceremoniously shut down, and found out my full-time school will close. Top it off with breaking my arm and wrist by slipping on the ice and getting a new job,it’s been pretty hectic. The good news is that I have some stories in the works for 2017.

I’d like to start of 2017 with something creative in order to set the mood for this year. Honestly, 2016 was a struggle for me, so it’ll be nice to be creative again. Recently, I have been writing paranormal/speculative poetry. I thought I’d share this one with you all because I had fun writing it while watching my husband play Dead Rising 4 this week. (The cast makes it impossible for me to play any game; I’m so jealous!)

Damaged Flesh

If stitches were wishes,

I’d have ninety-three

from stomach to thigh

right down to my knee.

Wielding axes and knives

and all sorts of weaponry,

they hacked and they sliced

’til blood spewed all over me.

I dropped to the floor

as they shouted with glee.

But I refused to stay down,

for I am a zombie.

Teaching literature has really helped me enjoy poetry a lot more than I used to. Limericks are especially fun. I have a ton lying around because I would write them along with my students. Maybe I’ll share a couple sometime.
